1. Make Time and Space: In order to settle more comfortably into the habit of private prayer you need to find a space and make time. Find 15 minutes (you can wake up earlier or go to bed later) -
only you know what space and time works best for you. Find YOUR space and time.
2. Invite Silence:Waiting for a totally noiseless prayer time is usually futile. Learn to cultivate
interior silence, to quiet of the chatter that is in our minds. Ways to help could include playing quiet "background music," relaxing each muscle, breathing or closing your eyes.
3. Begin to talk with God:Talking to God is much like talking to others. If you are new to prayer, it may be helpful to begin with Scripture. Eventually your own words of prayer will flow.
4. Listen Actively:Prayer is a conversation. In conversation there is both listening and speaking by both parties involved in the conversation. You will hear God, if you listen, in Scripture, in the people and events of life and within yourself.
5. Imagine!Prayer can be creative. Meet Jesus in your imaginiation. What is he saying and doing? What will happen because of the encounter you have had with him?
Be sure to begin keeping a prayer journal to jot down what struck you in your conversations with God.
Next post we will provide tips on reviewing your day while praying, which can be a great addition to your daily time alone with God.
