How do we become more fully invested in following Jesus and furthering His Mission when we must “Shelter in Place”? Here are some simple, practical ways to personalize our discipleship with “Social Distancing”:
TAKE TIME FOR “INNER REFLECTION” …
Focus on things that matter to God; attend to my relationship with God and others.
Rebuild and strengthen the parts of my life that are no longer “full of life”, avoid
decisions and actions that prevent me from living life fully and holistically…
Honestly identify “What needs to be strengthened in me?” Then act on my insight!
I memorize a meaningful line from Scripture, a good book & share what it means to me
I Forgive an old abrasion or hurt that I received
I slow down my reactions, put away quick, sharp words, resentments, harsh judgements
I decide what’s enough, sufficient and what’s extraneous and do something about it
I consciously find ways to eliminate a bias or a prejudice I have
I share something of human interest when I gather with others, especially at leisure times
I share with God through prayer that’s focused on the needs of the suffering world
PRACTICAL PRACTICES FOR SOCIAL GROWTH…
I make a habit of giving sincere complements to those with whom I live and work
I spend some quality time with someone who is lonely, sick or elderly
I pay attention to someone who is usually ignored or discounted by others
I persevere in taking steps to mend a broken relationship
I take time to learn something new, explore an unfamiliar topic or experience & share
I spend an hour without complaining, and if possible, I try it for another hour & another
I develop a habit of blessing not cursing; of discovering reasons to bless and be thankful
I donate resources, funds, time or talent to an agency that supports “first responders” caring for all those ill or affected by the corona virus.
ATTITUDES AND ACTIONS TO AVOID IN THIS TIME OF THE PANDEMIC AND AFTER…
I do very little to relieve innocent suffering and distress in others
I try to impress others on my own superiority and know-how to fight this virus
I reject opinions of others because they believe or think differently from me
I withdraw my care of others when their decisions don’t meet with my approval
I refuse to disclose feeling ill to a proven, trusted guide out of pride because I don’t want to admit being “weak or in need”
I lack compassion… being critical on those whose decisions endanger themselves or others
May we always remember, “God will judge the suffering on humility, honesty, and gratitude and will judge me on my God-given gifts that express mercy, and generosity”.
