Mary, his Mother… what sort of disciple is she? She listens in faith attentively; clarified if she wasn’t certain; totally trusts God, accepts blessing, suffering of being Mother of Messiah; serves her family with unconditional love; learns all about humble mothering in safety and on the run; supports her Son in his public ministry, stands courageously with him in his many crosses; accepts the task of faithful motherhood for all people, at all times.
Joseph, his Foster Father… what sort of disciple is he? He’s a just and compassionate man; a skilled carpenter, builder, repairs what’s broken; humbled by God’s choice of him to protect, teach, care for his family; attentive and obedient to God’s messages in dreams; risks refugee status in a foreign land, learns new language, customs, provides for family by his trade.
Together, Mary and Joseph enriched Jesus’ life by helping him absorb their relationships of love with God and each other. Their loving response to God made them “Model Disciples”. In Lk 11; 28 Christ honors his parents and their way of discipleship. What impressed you most about your parents?
